Galbanum (Ferula galbaniflua, Ferula gummosa)

IMG_2846This large, hollow-stemmed, perennial herb produces a clear to yellow-brown or olive tinted essential oil, which is extracted from the milky white translucent oleo resin or gum or ‘tears’ that exude from incisions made at the base of the stem. Both sedative and stimulant, this essential oil balances erratic moods, reduces nervous tension, is restorative and tonic, as well as being a valuable skin care ingredient and is especially indicated for mature and / or damaged skin, among many other supportive qualities.

Patchouli (Pogostomon cablin Benth.)

IMG_4573Patchouli is a fragrant bushy perennial herb native to the tropical regions of Asia. The leaves are picked two or three time a year and are left to dry and ferment before being distilled to release their dark orange or amber viscous essential oil. Patchouli instills a sense of peace and ‘spirituality’ and calms and regulates the flow of breathing so is often applied as an aid to meditation and an anti-anxiety remedy. Patchouli also alleviates nervous tension and exhaustion, is grounding and restorative, among many other qualities. Blended in vegetable oil, cream or lotion, patchouli is also an invaluable skin care ingredient, and soothes dermatitis and eczema,
